Article 74 of Labor Law no 4857 regulates the basis for female workers' maternity and nursing leaves.

Within that scope, female employees must not be engaged in work for a total period of sixteen weeks, eight weeks prior to delivery and eight weeks after delivery. Within that period, the employee receives temporary incapacity allowance in accordance with General Health Insurance provisions. If the female employee so wishes, she shall be granted an unpaid leave of up to six months after the expiry of the sixteen week period.

This leave is a legally ensured right. In that respect, it is obligatory to grant the female employee an unpaid leave of six months after the expiry of sixteen weeks.
